This isn’t where I’m meant to be. I stare at the building straight ahead. The queue to get in travels along the street. Bouncers stand at the door being very selective of who they let in. The streetlights highlight the skimpy dresses young girls wear. If I had a daughter, she wouldn’t be allowed to leave the house looking like any of them. Sadness floods my body with my last thought. I don’t know where it came from but I don’t want it to stay.

I close my eyes and shake my head, mentally trying to push it away. It doesn’t belong in the present.

The vision is there and I don’t want it to be. Pain and suffering. I’ve suffered enough already with a past that is full of darkness.

Opening my eyes, I shake my thought away and re-focus on now.

Maria is inside. She arrived early evening and hasn’t left.

As I open my car door, I know I shouldn’t be here. I shouldn’t want to see her, but I do, and I find myself walking straight up to the bouncers and showing them my badge. “I’d like to see Mrs Fraser.” I expect to go straight inside. “Hold on,” says one of the men standing guard at the main entrance before he makes a phone call. “Come with me,” he says as he ends the call. I follow him around the side of the building. Keeping my wits about me, my eyes dart around the dark street. “Through this door and at the top of the stairs.” With that, he leaves me.

The sound of buzzing comes from the intercom on the wall and I open the door. It closes with a thud behind me and I also hear the clicking of a lock.

Lights come on and there’s a spiral staircase in front of me. Where am I? I climb the staircase to the top and the door in front of me opens.

“What can I do for you, Detective?” Maria asks softly, standing before me in the doorway wearing jeans and a t-shirt, barefoot.

My eyes roam her body, and I know exactly what she can do for me. And more importantly, what I can do for her.

That is, finish off what we started last night.
